Mustafa motions to approve minutes from 4/20/2020. Angel Martinez seconds. Unanimously approved

Officer reports

President: Angel Martinez

  • SVYD remains active on social media during this pandemic.
  • COVID-19 has revealed that we need electeds that support their constituents and base their decisions on their constituents’ well being.
  • We need to get more young people elected into office.

 

Vice President: Alexander Gvatua

  • Due to COVID-19, canvassing is not an option right now, but SVYD hopes to support endorsed candidates by phone banking.

Membership Director: Allie Hughes

  • Membership to isolate and check local CDC for updates in their area
  • OCI (Orchard City Indivisible) meeting on 4/21/20 from 6:30-9:30PM

 

Finance Director: Ryan Globus

  • The fundraising committee has an upcoming fundraiser on May 28 at 7pm via Zoom.
  • COVID-19 has revealed the importance of local politics; grateful for local electeds

 

Political Director: Mustafa Arshad

  • Thankful for everyone that joined this meeting
  • Endorsement committee is ongoing and will be interviewing candidates soon; will endorse and talk about local races soon

  • Consideration of bylaw changes to allow early endorsements from SVYD to change the voting majority from 60% to more than 50% of the majority
    • Motion to endorse the split roll tax amendment by Angel and second by Ryan
    • 14 in favor, 0 against, 0 abstentions
      • Motion passes
  • Fundraiser committee update
    • Fundraiser is set for May 28, 2020 at 7PM
      • Cost: $20 for general audience and $10 for students and youth
      • Featuring Cindy Chavez and Assemblymember Evan Low
        • Focused on what youth engagement looks like for the upcoming election

    • Motion to endorse David Cohen for San Jose City Council, District 4 by Mustafa and second by Emily Ramos

  • Consideration of endorsement for Josh Becker for California State Senate, District 13
    • Motion to endorse Josh Becker for California State Senate, District 13 by Justin Lardinois and second by Emily Ramos

  • Consideration of endorsement for Ali Saperman for San Jose Evergreen Community College Board of Trustees
    • Motion to endorse Ali Saperman for San Jose Evergreen Community College Board of Trustees by Angel and second by Mustafa

  • Guest Speaker: Ketzal Gomez running for Santa Clara County Board of Education, District 4
  • Guest Speaker: Michael Vargas
    • Support Michael Vargas in proposing to change Santa Clara Central Committee bylaws to allow democrats to endorse nondemocrats in races without democrats, that exemplify democratic ideals.

SVYD Bylaws: April 20, 2020 Amendment

The SVYD Bylaws were amended as follows at the April 20, 2020 meeting:

Article VII (Endorsements), Section 2(c)(ix) shall be amended to read as follows:

 

Any general membership endorsement vote must receive a simple 60% majority to be adopted.
